In a combined effort of using something up to have fewer things in my apartment, and to add some coziness to cold nights, I've taken to lighting the scented candles I've had around for a good long while - many years, for a few of them. At this point, I'm not really burning them for the scents anymore so much as I am for the ritual.

Speaking of, with my new coat arriving, I definitely don't have any reason to keep the old one around. Just excuses. Not even "I'm at work most of the day" cuts it as the closest place is open before my clients expect me. I don't like that it's just excuses, and hopefully that'll help push me to get it dealt with sooner.

I forget whether I discovered the technique for turning artichoke leaves into cardoons earlier than last year. Having solidly learned the knack, I've started the harvest already (while the globes won't start showing up for a couple more months). The result is basically a slightly bitter "carrier" for other flavors, but they add bulk and fiber to a dish. They go well with marinara sauce, for example.

I actually got my act together to grow some "winter vegetables" this year and have a dozen cabbages thinking about doing something, as well as some assorted greens. Haven't checked to see if the peas have come up, but there are also onions that were started as seed last spring that have gotten as far as scallions now. This is the tricky time of year when I don't have the irrigation turned on, so I need to pay attention to whether it's raining often enough to keep things going.

I harvested all dozen or so of my grapefruit and they're chilling happily in the crisper drawer. (Some critter had gotten to a couple of them, so I didn't want to leave them on the tree.) I have a half grapefruit every couple of days, since the word is that they don't always play well with blood thinners and I don't want to overdo it, but that'll take me through the end of the month or so.

The juice oranges are mostly ripe and I'm picking one or two at a time. (I think there may be a couple dozen in total across three trees.) And it's time to Do Something with this year's Seville orange crop, which reminds me I need to reach out to the friend who wants some for marmalade. (I can never remember what the middle vowel in marmalade should be on the first try.)

Other than that, I need to spend a lot more time pruning and weeding during the wet-and-fallow season. But the first daffodil bloomed today, so there's that.

If your iPad is running iPadOS 26, you might have already experimented with Windowed App mode which allows apps to be in self-contained windows, allowing for windowed multitasking more like a desktop operating system interface. That’s obviously quite a different experience than the traditional iPad interface, which was more single task oriented with a focused ... Read More

Vidding

I've been slowly making my way through some of the new vids from this year's Festivids and, oh, do I miss vidding. A song that I used in a vid myself years ago came up on a Spotify playlist earlier, and I could still pretty much see the entire vid playing in my head as I was listening to it.

Part of me really wants to try to get back into it, but I know that I don't have the spoons for it. Not right now. I'd basically be starting from scratch when it comes to the various programs needed to properly vid, and even if I were to somehow get the spoons together to go to the trouble of getting everything I'd need? I'd still have to find the time for it. I barely have time to write fanfiction sometimes, and I can fit it in at work or on the bus - neither of which would be an option with vidding.

But, oh, that doesn't make me miss it any less.

Ghostlight by Suzanne Palmer : The fourth and final book in The Finder Chronicles is a satisfying stopping point, but I dearly hope there is more some day. Spoilery thoughts. )

Silver & Lead by Seanan McGuire: Somehow I let the new October Daye book get by me last fall, so right after finishing Ghostlight, I picked it up and read it in a day. It picks up four months after the last big story; I hesitate to call it a calmer story, because there is no such thing as a calm Toby Daye story, but in comparison to what came right before it does seem like a bit of a break (although with a warning for child endangerment). Spoilers for the book and series. )

Saving Throw: I'm pretty sure I've mentioned the Save Data Team streaming channel here before. I discovered them some years ago through their Ace Attorney with an Actual Lawyer series (they're currently working on Investigations 2, which is the only game in the series I've never played, so it's been fun to discover it along with them), and I've been watching much of their content ever since. But one series I hadn't been following was Saving Throw, which is their D&D actual play podcast. I kept telling myself that I would catch up someday, and I decided "someday" had finally arrived. I've actually been listening to the audio-only podcast version, which makes it much easier to listening while doing other things; I'm now up to Arc 4 (Episode 30) and enjoying it immensely. Chris, the DM, is an excellent storyteller who's created an interesting post-apocalyptic world, and he expertly wrangles a team of five screw-ups who've just graduated at the bottom of their class from an adventurers academy. The stakes start out apparently small, but before long the group is thrown into the deep end of politics and legends, and it's fun to watch them navigate that as well as their interpersonal relationships. The DM and players all know each other really well, and that trust and respect shows in the way they play, even when they're giving each other a hard time. The series is still going -- looks like they just wrapped up Arc 7 -- and I'm looking forward to catching up.

still mulling over on this line of thought for a while, and there are parts of this i won't share, but doing this zihark doujin At This Particular Time as an extension of me creating art for the Muse as an act of worship - strikes me as quietly... necessary? urgent? to be mindful of as a north star?

thoughtline influenced by:

++ what i previously mentioned about Creating && avoiding "metrics existentialism" ages ago
+ rahaeli mentioning religion studies doing far more for T+S/moderation work than anyone thought. (likely: faith, rituals, how people craft those, instinctively or deliberately....)
this post about general insecurities of the new guard of selfshippers (i say 'new guard' because how all of that is worded is completely new to me even though i do recognize some of the adjacent feelings in my 20 years, even though they're not a concern to me anymore * )
+ general social media posts by art peers clearly hinting at existential angst about art not getting the views/clicks online that it used to even a few months ago (even on algorithim-less sites).
+ when a doujin circle member mentioned long ago that the people least likely to be affected by LLM existentialist fear are the ones with an internal calling for their 'outsider' art, however form that may take. (isolated selfshipping, furries and comickers creating elaborate worldbuilding for themselves offline, etc. )

mostly highlighting the 'act of worship' part since as absolutely corny as that sounds on its face, it's a protective veil in terms of ... process? that negates so much of the negative externalities of the above. - hell, maybe one of many reasons why religion/spirituality is so powerful, since it has a habit of getting in between social power structures of the day and individuals, when they choose to believe in something on a smaller scale.

( *it would have been a little mean to me to respond to that post about my personal advice of thinking of it as an active act. creating something, whether art, writing, a fanshrine, etc - as a pilgrimage of sorts. evidence for you and the fates. spirituality has a way of coming in the edges around that, when you give it a home. )

and just... it's funny.

i would be surprised at the coincidence of somehow ending up drawing this doujin precisely when existential anxiety around art was at its highest, but...  there's so many of these little "coincidences" around this Muse that have happened over the decades .... nudges, if you will. where it just fell into place that clearly I was meant to do X thing at Y time that's so blindingly obvious in retrospect.

i just don't question it, not anymore.

man, i am so relieved i'm working on this. for so, so many reasons. feels like coming home.

In the midst of writing five ways Sir Robert and Catherine could have got together post-canon for [community profile] yuletide, the inevitable result was also thinking about what if they were just married already. And I hadn't yet actually written them for [community profile] 100ships or TWB for [community profile] 100fandoms, so I scribbled this down somewhere in between or after the assignment, and here it is.

Dear Care and Feeding,

When I was 14, my parents kicked me out because I was doing drugs and getting rides with random dudes. My uncle found me a couple of days later, having driven around town constantly looking for me the moment he heard about what had happened. He was a total wild man, but he put a roof over my head when nobody else would, gave me unconditional love, and helped me find my way. He helped me get into college, and he paid for it.

When he died, he left a void in my life. He also left me the house I grew up in, a large amount of money, and a successful business. Suddenly, my parents and my brothers, whom I’ve not spoken to in nearly two decades, are “reaching out.” It’s heartbreaking because I’ve always wanted my family back, but I am not stupid enough to believe that they have any interest in me. Is there a pathway for reconciliation here? Or am I just kidding myself? Am I a fool for wanting these people in my life? Or to even believe that could happen on my terms?

I'm looking at this naked fashion trend and I'm just... First, my brain goes back to Roman sumptuary laws on see-through muslin from India.  (It was absolutely see-through, too.)  Second, though, I think, 'Oh, look, the new body control for women.  Take your GLP-1s, and don't eat so you have less ground to complain about the prices of food, and show yourself off to the men.'  So, misogyny and fat-shaming. :sighs:

I'll believe this isn't misogyny when I see the straight guys wearing their best lingerie undersuits cut out of see-through fabrics, just FYI.

I'm usually a winter person, but this year, I've been sick and then cranky and look forward to spring.  Not to summer, just spring.

Anyone got stuff that's making them happy?  I'm resisting getting into Heated Rivalry because the only sport I watch is volleyball and some of the Olympics.  Mostly gymnastics and ice skating.  I'm not sure who else is reading Longmire or In Death, and honestly, I'm afraid Johnson has written himself into a corner with Longmire.  There's a nice Discord server for Highlander, and I'm hoping the group rewatches will get me back into my fandom, but honestly, most of the characters there don't talk to me now.

Ah, well.  Maybe once I finish the Leverage novel, the Numbers novel, and the Marvel/Lonesome October piece I'll get back to it.  I can hope?

i have a low opinion of short form sites like bsky/twitter, but -imo, knowing what i do about private investment circles- this is an exceptional succinct thread explaining a lot of corporate stupidity right now. bolded part for emphasis.

‪@robot-bastard.bsky.social‬

> But that's the thing, in modern capitalism the "users" are not the "customers". The professionals you mention are just the income stream, but the *customers* are the ones you've got to please or they'll shut you down, and in this case the customers are the stock traders.

> "well why do we care about them" because most of these big companies are running on loans, and every year they have to roll the loans

>So if your stock price tanks because you aren't doing what the traders want, then your valuation drops, and you might not be able to get a big enough loan to pay off your current one, and that means you immediately go out of business.

> Therefore: the stock traders are your customers. The people who actually make things with Animate, they're just *users*, and maybe they'll grump and grumble but in the end they'll just switch to After Effects, so it really doesn't matter what they think...

edit: looked at adobe's stock across their whole public existence and: lol. lmao. kek even.

Decades after the PCs' last adventure, an old epic foe reappears, still bent on conquest.

Time to get the band back together!

Alas, the band isn't just dispersed. All but one member is long dead.

Happily, the last surviving member is a necromancer.
